Fundamentals

For Parents

Beginner's Approach

Beginner's Approach

A note to parents and child guardians. Steve's Drum Lessons began prior to him graduating high-school. We report.

In 35 years of teaching we have seen it all. Rock-n -Roll ain't nose pollution but it is a cesspool at times, theaspians are about the only theater artists to  out cesspool the "professional" environment of the music industry. Stay vigilant in the screenings of your child's mentors. To keep it clean we recommend you participate in your child's music and lessons as much as possible. We like padded rooms with doors with windows in'em, so you can observe the lesson in progress. The blessings outweigh the curse, just know the curse is present where the high energy of live entertainment exists.  It makes people a little Lolo. .

Drummer Steve Campbell's first teaching gig was Treble Cleff Music and later Hume Music in Lawrence KS.  Big Dudes Music City hosted Steve's Drum Lessons in Kansas City for 3 years.

Stagedoor Productions hosted Steve's Drum lessons in Sydney Australia in 1999 for almost 2 years.

Bounty Music of Maui Hawaii hosted Steve's Drum Lessons in 2001 and Music & Sound of Sugarland TX, All Pawn/ Katz Guitars of The Woodlands TX hosted Steve's Drum Lessons in Texas until Independent Media Promotion opened I.M.P Studios in the Woodlands.

Beginner's Approach

This little section is for the prospecting. A beginners approach. Steve's Drum Lessons would like to share strategies for the almost committed,  the newly enthusiastic or the "talentless" dreamer".  Obviously the later being complete bullshit. While the commitment is expensive,  time consuming, and frustrating the reward is almost instant and infinite.

We encourage the curious to jump in totally unprepared. Whether you're lacking equipment,  space, finance, knowledge of the art , even limbs , Steve's Drum Lessons has some free tips to get you started.

Sticking

Beginner's Approach

The Unspoken Jealously of Drummers

Learn how to hold your sticks and mallets before you must unlearn poor technique. Do this now. Whether it's Big Band Jazz or Taiko THEY DO IT FOR A REASON never embellish upon this learning, wrist damage can result in surgery.

Watch Dave Weckle first THEN Tommy Lee

The Unspoken Jealously of Drummers

No drummer ignorant of basic music theory has much fun for very long. The accomplished tonal instrumentalist has obsessed about the intervals and relationships of vibrations and it usually shows in their compositions. If and when that can be combined with poetry and a songwriter is born, there's a drummer that feels like a monkey for half steppin' . It's the truth. String players are often the envy of a drummer that knows how potentially rewarding a classical music education might be if the navigation of composition was easier,  and possible.  So..

Aquire a Bell Kit. That's priceless advice from a seasoned pro looking  through the rear view mirror.

Reading Music

The Unspoken Jealously of Drummers

Practice, a practical approach

Reading notation is going expedite your study and progress period.Concert Percussionist, Drumset, and Drum Corps will require this knowledge to synchronize and communicate. So , learn it , read it write it , speak it and PLAY IT!

Practice, a practical approach

The Unspoken Jealously of Drummers

Practice, a practical approach

Two minutes of everything you know or learn tomorrow. 30 minutes minimum daily encompassing previously learned techniques, patterns and cadence, or beats. Attention to the simplest thing , more focus and attention on the most difficult things. One day a week, one 4 hour rehearsal. It's o.k. to zone out, wake up from your own trance from the repetition of the beat you were playing,  you're on your way. When you think its time to play to recorded music, play to a metronome,  humbles us all the time.  Learning during the age of the cassette tape probably helped adjust to intoxicated bandmates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drummer Steve Campbell  has been playing music for over 37 years and has performed at various venues throughout America and Australia.

Drummer Steve Campbell specializes in Metal and Hard Rock. Other styles are taught. Any genre that a drumset can compliment is encompassed within Steve's Drum Lesson curriculum. The student must request a focused genre for the best learning experience. Multiple genres are introduced as part of beginners lessons.

No, not if you are as disciplined as Chuck Norris.

Back in the day ( early 90's ) drum lessons were the funnest part of the week because it was direct exposure and council from someone with greater experience in the art. Perspective was gained by having more than one instructor. Yes it was more expensive than internet-based learning.  The most important element of having an instructor that you meet with regularly is : The lesson is designed either to solve problems or introduce new concepts and challenges in a very specific order. Exceeding an assignment means adjustments to the following assignment as to present an appropriate challenge(s). As well any shortcomings or failures to complete the assignments are met with strategies to solve the problems ON THE SPOT! Because the students development is crucial. That's what you pay a master instructor for, even a subtle scolding from time to time. The idea is to progress to the point of retention. Retention of skill and interest. Often it is an instructors that introduce new music and artists to the novice player, beginning student that reward alone is worth a 30 minute lesson. Some students want to know more about maintaining their drums than how to play them. Some students walk in knowing more about building drums than playing them. Most students are young and inspired and seek rapid growth as an artist and so do their parents.

So, lets get into it!

Here's your lesson!

I need you to give traditional grip some attention if you haven't already. Slow focused strokes and then some varied syncopation. Don't worry about pushing tempos yet just make the left hand behave. Remember the 2 minute rule.

Let's count and play aloud

This is another quick lesson designed to take any time signature to the next level. YOU decide what you want where. There's plenty of space for embellishments. 2 minute rule applies. Seasoned players please challenge yourself to express these counts with your improvisation.  Beginners, accent with one limb at a time.

Count AND Play!

4/4

Count the 8th note, move the accent. " 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & " - 2 minutes of each. Theres 4 minutes of rehearsal that DOESN'T BEGIN until you play it correctly.  Or purhaps you're like Drummer Steve Campbell and start the two minutes over if there's a mistake.

Now, with 16th notes counted out loud. After only one accented note being changed after every 2 minutes of focused uninterrupted repetition of the previous. You should have a minimum of 32 minutes of rehearsal.  You might not have even struck a bass drum.

Next we want a double accent. "1e" for example.  On the right hand alone, on the left hand alone, single stroke and double stroke patterns at any tempo, perfect. Keep counting out loud through this process.  You should be nearing an hour of study. Compound stroke those previous accents, that means more than one limb firing. Bass drum and hi hat for example, or snare and floo tom until it gets hypnotic.

6/8

 " 1 2 3 4 5 6 "

3/4

You guessed it

7/8

This is gonna be fun

9/8

Oh we're gonna!

11/8

Spoil yourself, indulge me.

This is where " subdivisions " get exciting.

You've only begun to count with style. Drummer Steve Campbell wants you to be able to hold a vocal melody over these counts but that's other story.. he can't! So theres no shame in taking your time with the following excersizes.
